$675K sale-topping Malibu Moon colt wins Saratoga debut

Thursday, July 25, 2013
Corfu, a $675,000 Barretts Select sale topper by Malibu Moon, made a promising debut at the races Thursday, July 25th when he overcame his rail post to blaze a front-running victory in a loaded $80,000 Maiden Special Weight heat for 2-year-olds at Saratoga.

Ridden by John Velazquez, the handsome bay colt broke well and flashed sharp early speed in the five-furlong race on dirt, putting away the competition in the stretch and hitting the wire in :58.27 as the short-priced favorite.

Conditioned by Todd Pletcher, Corfu was making his highly-anticipated first start for owners Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and John Magnier, who bought the colt earlier this year at Barretts March Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale for that top price of $675,000. Bloodstock agent Demi O’Byrne signed the ticket for the famed Coolmore connections.

Corfu, who is out of the Forest Wildcat mare Fashion Cat, was bred in Kentucky by AGS Thoroughbreds Ltd.
