Alec's Moon was much the best in the $50,000 Portland Meadows Oaks on Jan. 29, winning by 6 1/2-lengths as the 3-5 favorite. The 3-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon navigated the one mile in 1:40.13.
Just a day later, multiple Graded stakes winner Sweet August Moon made her 2011 debut in the Grade 1 Santa Monica H., and pushed her earnings to $492,396 with her third-place finish to the rising star Switch.
Malibu Moon was North America's third leading sire of 2010, with $8,559,292 in progeny earnings. The Spendthrift stallion had 11 stakes winners last year, led by a trio of Grade 1 winning fillies: Life At Ten, Devil May Care, and Malibu Prayer.
Alec's Moon is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, who is part owner of the filly along with Mark DeDomenico LLC and John Carver. Hollendorfer bought Alec's Moon from the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale for $125,000.
With a lifetime record of 3-2-0 in seven starts, Alec's Moon has now earned $97,585. This was her first stakes victory. She was bred in Kentucky by David Garvin.
