Alec's Moon scores rare Oaks-Derby double

Wednesday, March 23, 2011
With her victory in the March 23 Portland Meadows Derby, the 3-year-old filly Alec's Moon completed a sweep of the Derby and the Portland Meadows Oaks, which she won  by 6 1/2-lengths on Jan. 29.

The daughter of Malibu Moon won the 1 1/16 mile Derby with relative ease, much like the Oaks. She stalked the pace for the first six furlongs, then moved quickly to the front to win by a widening two lengths as the prohibitive 1-2 favorite.

Alec's Moon is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, who is part owner of the filly along with Mark DeDomenico LLC and John Carver. Hollendorfer bought Alec's Moon from the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale for $125,000.

With a lifetime record of 4-2-0 in eight starts, Alec's Moon has now earned $115,240. She was bred in Kentucky by David Garvin.

Alec's Moon is a half-sister to the stakes winner Ayla Bella and out of Bello Cielo, who was second in the Grade 1 Hollywood Oaks.

Malibu Moon, who finished 2010 ranked third on the North American general sire list, is enjoying another good season in 2011. He currently ranks fifth on the sire list, with Malibu Pier, winner of the Santa Ana S. (G2) on March 19, his top earner this year.
