Spendthrift Farm’s Awesome Patriot, the stakes-winning full brother to Preakness (G1) winner Oxbow, sired his first foal just after midnight on Sunday, Feb. 8th when a colt was born at Windhorse Thoroughbreds in Middleburgh, New York.

Bred by Patty Lavelle, the likely-gray colt is the first foal out of the gray Macho Uno mare Chickpea.

“He’s nice, leggy and looks like he will gray out.  Very tall for a first foal,” said Lavelle. “We are very excited about this foal.  He seems strong and smart, and at this point, very correct.”

A $350,000 yearling, Awesome Patriot is by emerging sire of sires Awesome Again, and out of the mare Tizamazing – a $1 million yearling herself, and a full sister to two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) champion and leading sire Tiznow. Awesome Patriot’s full brother is 2013 Preakness (G1) winner Oxbow, and the immediate family includes Grade 1 winner Paynter, who is also by Awesome Again and hails from the mare Tizso – a full sister to Awesome Patriot’s dam, Tizamazing.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Awesome Patriot won his debut as a 2-year-old at Hollywood Park, defeating the likes of Grade 1 winner Coil. He became graded stakes-placed in the Hollywood Prevue S. (G3) before stretching his speed around two turns to win a one-mile allowance race at Santa Anita in 1:35 flat as a juvenile. At 3, Awesome Patriot won the Alydar S. at 1 1/8 miles at Hollywood, earning a 97 Beyer.

Awesome Patriot is standing his second season at Spendthrift for a fee of $3,500 stands and nurses, and is a participant in Spendthrift’s popular Breed Secure Program.
