Beholder is in hand at the finish of the G1 Las Virgenes S.
Beholder, B. Wayne Hughes’ Eclipse Champion 2-year-old filly for 2012, made amends Saturday for her loss in the Santa Ynez S. on Jan. 21, completely outclassing her competition with a 3 3/4-length victory in the $250,000 Las Virgenes S. (G1) for 3-year-old fillies.
Breaking from post position five in an eight-horse field, Beholder, carrying Spendthrift Farm's distinctive purple and orange silks, went right to the front at the start of the one-mile contest. Never really threatened at any point, she carved out fractions of 23.78, 47.55, 1:11.19. The bay filly really asserted herself at the top of the lane, leaving her foes to fight for the minor awards while she hit the wire in 1:36.14.
“Everything she did today was great. She’s a great filly. We’ll enjoy this today, but plans are for her to run next in the Santa Anita Oaks (Grade 1, 1 1/16 miles, April 6),” said winning trainer Richard Mandella.
“It was a whole different feeling today,” added jockey Garrett Gomez. “She did everything beautiful. She traveled beautifully, when I asked her to quicken, she quickened. I couldn’t have asked her to do anything better for me. She’s back!”
With the winner’s share of $150,000, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner increased her earnings to $1,395,000, with a record of 7-4-2-0.
