Beholder tops 2012 Filly Experimental Free 'Cap

Wednesday, January 30, 2013
B. Wayne Hughes' Beholder, last year's Eclipse champion 2-year-old champion filly who won the Breeders' Cup Grey Goose Juvenile Fillies (G1), received the high weight assignment of 123 pounds on The Jockey Club's 2012 Experimental Free Handicap for fillies, released Jan. 30 by The Jockey Club.

The Experimental weights are based on a theoretical race at 1 1/16 miles on dirt, the exact conditions of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Beholder won three of her five starts and was second by a nose in the Del Mar Debutante S. (G1) with total earnings of $1,215,000. She was bred in Kentucky by Clarkland Farm and races in the familiar colors of Spendthrift Farm.

Second in her sophomore debut, the Jan. 21 Santa Ynez S. (G2) at Santa Anita, Beholder was found to have a minor ulcer in her throat after that race. Her trainer Richard Mandella is optimistic that the filly can make the Las Virgenes S. (G1) on March 1.
