Spendthrift Farm's Beholder was named the 2012 Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old filly on Jan. 19 during the ceremonies held at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.
Beholder, a spectacular winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) in early November, broke broke her maiden at Del Mar on July 22, then was beaten a nose in the Del Mar Debutante (G1) on Sept. 1. Her final Breeders' Cup prep came in a six-furlong allowance Oct. 4 at Santa Anita, when she turned in one of the most visually impressive races of the year, winning by 11 lengths with the greatest of ease, getting a gaudy 108 Beyer Speed Figure.
Spendthrift owner B. Wayne Hughes bought Beholder out of the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale, going to $180,000 for the daughter of Henny Hughes out of the Tricky Creek mare Leslie's Lady. She is also the dam of Spendthrift freshman sire Into Mischief, the third ranked first-crop sire of 2012, himself a Grade 1 winner at two in the CashCall Futurity (G1).
Beholder will make her 2013 debut on Jan. 21, going 6 1/2-furlongs at Santa Anita Park in the $150,000 Santa Ynez S. (G2). Beholder, trained by Richard Mandella, has three wins from five starts and has earned $1,215,000.
