First-Crop sire Freedom Child got his first stakes winner on Nov. 25 when the 2-year-old Fanniebellefleming edged clear of favorite Kapalua Starlight in mid-stretch and pulled away to a 2 ¼-length victory in the $50,000 Donna Freyer S. at Laurel Park.
Peter Pan S. (G2) winner Freedom Child, a son of leading sire Malibu Moon, stands at Country Life Farm in Maryland, with an advertised fee of $3,000 live foal for 2018.
After the break, Fanniebellefleming found herself three-wide vying for the lead in the compact six-horse field. Midway on the turn the eventual winner and Kapalua Starlight began to separate themselves, and were together until inside the furlong marker, when Fanniebellefleming asserted herself to finish the six furlongs in 1:12.28.
“My brother thought a lot of this filly when he sent her up to me. I hope she improves,” trainer Hamilton Smith said of his sibling Frank, who broke the chestnut filly in South Carolina. “I’m glad for Lee (owner Lee Christian) and it’s nice for South Carolina.
“She had one race where she got in some trouble and should have run better, but other than that what you see on her form is what she did,” Smith said. “I don’t know yet where we’re going to go from here.”
Fanniebellefleming was beaten just 2 1/4-lengths in her lone previous stakes start and has now earned $54,117.
