First Grade 1 horse for Archarcharch

Toews On Ice, the leading runner for Top-5 First-Crop Sire Archarcharch, added to his resume on Saturday with a game second-place finish in the $350,000 Los Alamitos Futurity (G1).

Already a three-time stakes winner, including the Bob Hope S. (G3) heading into the Futurity, Toews On Ice did nothing to tarnish his reputation in the Futurity, which was his first start around two turns.

Toews On Ice went right to the front under Martin Garcia, and got into a head-to-head battle with Frank Conversation. After six furlongs in 1:11.53, Toews On Ice began to edge clear and had a half-length lead with a furlong to run, but stablemate Mor Spirit rallied late for the win. Toews On Ice was six lengths clear of third-place finisher I’malreadythere.

"The race shaped up different than I thought it would with (Frank Conversation) showing speed, but Martin didn’t panic and just sat there. He rode a good race, He just got run down by a good horse,” said trainer Bob Baffert of his 1-2 finish.

Toews On Ice is now 3-1-2 in six starts and has earned $245,200 for the trio of Karl Watson, Mike Pegram and Paul Weitman.

With 14 winners, three stakes horses and just shy of $1 million in progeny earnings to date, Archarcharch ranks fourth on the 2015 First-Crop Sire list.
