Thursday, August 28, 2014
Top-5 Freshman sire Temple City notched his first stakes winner Thursday at Saratoga when Startup Nation swooped by the field en route to a dominating 4 ½-length victory in the $200,000 With Anticipation S. (G2).

Startup Nation is now a perfect two-for-two following Thursday’s victory and a maiden special weight score, also on the Saratoga turf, on Aug. 7. He is Temple City’s leading earner following the $120,000 payday, and boosted his sire to fifth on the 2014 Freshman Sire list.

The With Anticipation turned into a replay of sorts of Startup Nation’s maiden win. Breaking from the rail, he was content to trail the field early, then with an incredibly swift move on the far turn, went from last of eight to first in less than a quarter mile.

The dark bay colt continued to pour it on in the final furlong, drawing away with authority, posting an excellent time of 1:41.63 on firm turf.

"I'm very impressed," trainer ChadBrown said. "The horse had run similarly in his debut, very impressive, with a big, wide move running away. But running back in just three weeks and now against open company, nevertheless a stakes race, you need to move forward. For this horse to run back in three weeks and run the way he did, in 1:41 and change, he's a real runner."

Brown added that Startup Nation would likely head to Santa Anita for the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1).

Bred by Spendthrift Farm out of the stakes-placed mare Pennyrile, Startup Nation was a $95,000 purchase by Nick de Meric from the Paramount Sales consignment at 2013 Fasig-Tipton Preferred New York-bred Yearling sale.
