A relentless stretch run carried Holiday Mischief to a nose victory over the heavily favored Sunbean in Saturday's $100,000 Super Derby Prelude at Louisiana Downs.
The win was the first in a stakes for the 3-year-old son of Into Mischief. The Spendthrift stallion has five stakes winners this year, topped by Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby winner Goldencents, and nine stakes wins both rank second on the 2013 Sophomore Sire list.
Holiday Mischief broke very alertly from the rail in the 1 1/16-mile Prelude, but his jockey M. C. Berry allowed him to settle in the third spot along the fence as Sunbean was keen to go for the lead. Sunbean coasted through six furlongs in 1:12.54 and looked home free coming into the final quarter mile.
Holiday Mischief had other ideas, however; coming off the fence for the stretch run to slowly reel in the pacesetter, poking his nose in front just yards from the finish. The final time on the fast track was 1:44.33.
Bred in Kentucky by Sheltowee Farm and partners, Holiday Mischief was purchased by Carter Thoroughbreds, who co-owns the colt with trainer Joe Offolter, at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale.
