Newly-turned 3-year-old Hopeful Notion battled his way to a nose victory against a full field of sophomores Jan. 18 at Fair Grounds (VIDEO
). The son of Notional was making just his second career start, and his first going around two turns.
Going a mile and 70 yards, Hopeful Notion contested the pace for the entire trip. First by a head after a quarter mile, the bay Louisiana bred shuffled back to third, but less than two lengths from the front, after six furlongs. Coming again near the quarter pole under Miguel Mena, he locked into a stretch duel with Executive Call. The pair pulled away from the field, with Hopeful Notion proving best by a narrow margin. The top two were 11 lengths clear of the third-place finisher.
Hopeful Notion was purchased out of the 2010 Keeneland November sale, with his current owner Autumn Hill Farms Racing Stable signing the ticket for $25,000.
Notional finished 2012 a top-25 first crop sire, with Canadian Juvenile S. winner Risky Call his leading earner on the year. Notional returns to Spendthrift for the 2013 season, where he will stand for $7,500 LFS&N.
