Malibu Moon Breeders' Cup preview

Friday, April 01, 2011
Two-time Grade 1 winner Ask the Moon and the promising 2-year-old colt Prospective will carry the torch for their sire Malibu Moon in this year's Breeders' Cup Nov. 4-5 at Churchill Downs. Malibu Moon, North America's leading sire of 2010, is ranked fourth on this year's list leading into the Breeders' Cup.

Ask the Moon, winner of the Personal Ensign S. and Ruffian H., both Grade 1 races, this summer at Saratoga, runs in the $2 million Ladies' Classic (G1) on Friday. The 6-year-old mare has earned $713,640 in her career for Farnsworth Stables LLC. Bred in Maryland by Mr. and Mrs. Charles McGinnes and Country Life Farm, Ask the Moon drew post five of ten for the tenth race, which runs under the lights at 7:30 p.m.

Prospective, winner of the Grade 3 Grey Cup S. at Woodbine in his last outing, will make his first start outside of Canada in Saturday's $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile. The dark bay colt, bred in Kentucky by Spendthirft Farm, LLC, is 2-1-0 in three starts, earning $161,317.

Prospective sold at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale, where he brought a winning bid from his owner John Oxley. He is the first foal out of Spirited Away, winner of the Truly Bound H.

The 1 1/16-mile Juvenile runs at 5:25 p.m. as the sixth race on the Saturday card.
