Malibu Moon colt tops Barretts Sale at $675,000

Malibu Moon

The fireworks at the Barretts March Select Sale started early, when a 2-year-old colt by Spendthrift Farm's leading sire Malibu Moon brought a winning bid of $675,000 from agent Demi O'Byrne, representing Michael Tabor.

This was the highest price attained at this sale in the past three years. Catalogued as hip No. 27 and bred in Kentucky by AGS Thoroughbreds Ltd, the juvenile breezed the fastest quarter-mile of the preview sale in :20 4/5 (VIDEO).

The bay colt, consigned by Breaking Point Farm, is out of the winning mare Fashion Cat, who has produced two winners to date. Fashion Cat is a half-sister to Peace Rules, who earned just over $3 million in a stellar career that included wins in the Haskell I. (G1), Blue Grass S. (G1), and Suburban H. (G1).

Malibu Moon's runners have gotten off to a terrific start in 2013, putting him atop the North American General Sire list through the first two months of the year. His top earner is the 3-year-old colt Orb, winner of the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth S. on Feb. 23, followed closely by the 3-year-old filly Kauai Katie, who has notched wins in both the Old Hat S. (G3) and Forward Gal S. (G2) at Gulfstream Park.
