Malibu Moon colt goes for $260K at Barretts

Malibu Moon

Tuesday, May 14, 2013
Malibu Moon, the 2013 leading sire by North American earnings, continued his hot streak in the sales ring at the May 13 Barretts 2-year-olds in training sale, with a colt by the Spendthrift stallion bringing a winning bid of $260,000, the third-highest price of the auction.

Hip No. 32 was consigned by Becky Thomas' Sequel Bloodstock and bought by the partnership of David Bienstock and Charles Winner. The bay Kentucky bred is out of Jill Robin L, winner of the Grade 2 Bonnie Miss S. at Gulfstream Park. She is the dam of Grade 3 placed Capitol Appeal.

Malibu Moon has risen to the top of the sire list with his stakes winners accounting for four graded victories, led of course by Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb, who goes for the second leg of the Triple Crown in the May 18 Preakness (G1), and also Freedom Child, recent winner of the Peter Pan S. (G2) who is targeting the Belmont S. on June 8.
