Spendthrift-bred Kauai Katie rolled by an eye-popping 12 lengths in her debut July 20 [VIDEO], earning the 2-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon the first TDN Rising Star tag of the 2012 Saratoga meet. A day later, Winding Way - her full sister - remained undefeated with an impressive allowance win at Del Mar to also become a TDN Rising Star.
The unprecedented feat marks the beginning of two promising careers on two different coasts. Kauai Katie earned an astounding 100 Beyer in her debut to make her the fastest juvenile so far in 2012 regardless of sex. The 100 Beyer is also historic, as very few 2-year-old fillies have ever earned a speed figure that high in their first respective starts. The last to do so was multiple graded stakes-winner Secret Gypsy, who earned a 100 Beyer debuting at Saratoga in 2007.
Winding Way, who is owned by Spendthrift, has enjoyed two impressive, runaway wins in California, earning a 97 Beyer in her most recent win Saturday while clearing an entry-level allowance as the short-priced favorite. The 97 Beyer already puts her among the fastest filly & mare sprinters out West in just her second career start.
Kauai Katie was a $490,000 Fasig-Tipton Florida March 2-year-old sale purchase by Stonestreet Stables this spring at Palm Meadows.
Both fillies hail from the More Than Ready mare More Than Pretty, winner of Churchill Downs' Open Mind S. More Than Pretty is still owned by Spendthrift and is currently in Australia, where she's expected to have a Tapit foal this fall on Southern Hemisphere time.
A perennial Top-10 sire, Malibu Moon currently ranks ninth on this year's General Sire list, with nearly $4 million in progeny earnings.
