Malibu Moon filly sets Keeneland track record

Two-year-old Carina Mia stormed home a 9 ¾-length winner in a 6 ½-furlong maiden special weight race on Thursday, setting a track record of 1:15.18 and earning a TDN Rising Star tag.

The daughter of Malibu Moon bested the old mark of 1:15.38, set last year by Bourbon Courage.

Second to Stageplay in her Oct. 10 debut at Keeneland, Carina Mia was much the best on Thursday. After stalking the early pace set by Malibu Stacy, Carina Mia ranged up to the lead on the turn, the took off in the stretch to leave her competition far behind (VIDEO).

Bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm, Carina Mia is Malibu Moon’s fourth rising star in the past two years. The dark bay or brown filly is a half-sister to Santa Margarita Inv. (G1) Miss Match. Their dam Miss Simpatica (ARG) is a full sister to Spinster S. (G1) winner Miss Linda (ARG).

Carina Mia sold to her owner Three Chimneys Farm for $410,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling sale.

Malibu Moon now has 135 winners in 2015, with progeny earnings nearing $7.9 million, ranking in once again in the top 10 on the General Sire list. He will stand the 2016 season at Spendthrift for $95,000 live foal.
