Malibu Moon firsters find winners circle at Del Mar, Monmouth

Monday, July 25, 2011
Top-10 sire Malibu Moon had a pair of sharp-looking debut winners on opposite coasts on July 24. The Spendthrift stallion is once again among the nation's leading sires with progeny earnings of nearly $4 million.

At Monmouth Park, Space Traveler zipped to a 3 3/4-length win with a strong move on the turn to pull away late in the 5 1/2-furlong contest for 2-year-olds. He stopped the clock in 1:04.72 (VIDEO).

The chestnut colt is out of the Silver Charm mare Silver Impulse, who won the Ontario Lassie S. and bankrolled $357,609. She is a half sister to Landaluce S. winner The Golden Noodle. Space Traveler was bred in Kentucky by Nursery Place, Donaldsn, and Broadbent. The breeders consigned him as a yearling to the Fasig-Tipton select yearling sale, where he brought a winning bid of $200,000 from his current owner, Twin Creeks Racing Stables.

Del Mar, Solar Wind breezed to a four length win with a flawless performance going 6 1/2-furlongs on the Polytrack (VIDEO). Stuck between horses for the first half mile, the 3-year-old filly began to draw off coming into the stretch and coasted home an easy winner.

Solar Wind is owned by W. Quinn Chin and was bred in Kentucky by Chestnut Farm. Quin purchased her for $80,000 at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale. Out of Western Woman, Solar Wind is a half sister to stakes winners Hype and Modern Cowboy.
