Malibu Moon maiden impresses at Aqueduct

Friday, April 15, 2011
Ripples n' Waves strolled home a 6 1/4-length winner for his first career victory in a one mile maiden race April 15 at Aqueduct. The dominating performance earned the 3-year-old son of Malibu Moon “TDN Rising Star” honors from the Thoroughbred Daily News.

After breaking sharply, Ripples n' Waves settled back in second, about a length off the lead. Jockey Edgar Prado called on his mount to move to the lead at about the quarter mile marker. Once in front, it was only a matter of by how big the final margin would be. The time for the mile was 1:35.46, giving him a stellar 91 Beyer Speed Figure.

The race featured a Malibu Moon exacta when another of his colts, Magnificent Moon, closed well to be second. Malibu Moon is currently a top 10 sire on the North American earnings list; he finished 2010 ranked third among all stallions.

Ripples n' Waves earned $25,800 for his owner Riley Mangum, who also bred the flashy chestnut. Mangum also raced and bred the winner's second dam, Alcovy, who was a multiple graded stakes winner and earner of nearly $900,000.
