Malibu Yankee added her name to the list of Malibu Moon's stakes winners with resolute victory in the $100,000 Opelousas S. at Evangeline Downs on Saturday (VIDEO). The 5-year-old mare is Malibu Moon's seventh stakes winner and 19th stakes horse this year. He is also one of only four sires with at least 79 individual winners in 2014.

A field of 11 fillies and mares went postward in the 1 1/16-mile grassy Opelousas. After breaking nearly last, Malibu Yankee was left to do her best running from the back of the pack. Still in ninth after six furlongs while near the rail, jockey Gerard Melancon switched quickly to the outside coming into the stretch, then flew down the lane to get up by a neck in 1:45 flat on the firm turf.

Malibu Yankee was the first foal of Winbrandlex, who is a half-sister to nine time stakes winner By the Light, who is also by Malibu Moon. Malibu Yankee is a graduate of the 2009 Keeneland November sale, where she brought a winning bid $50,000. After Saturday's victory, Malibu Yankee is now 6-5-3 in 20 starts, earning $238,602 for owner Jerry Namy.
