Malibu Moon

Malibu Moon's star colt Orb was installed the 7-2 morning line favorite for Saturday's $2 million Kentucky Derby (G1), which will be run for the 139th time this weekend at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey for co-owner and breeders Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable, Orb  is riding a four-race winning streak coming into the Run for the Roses, capped by his sensational victory in the Florida Derby (G1) on March 30.

Orb has made a huge impression since arriving at Churchill Downs from his south Florida base a little less than two weeks ago, including a stellar half-mile work in :47.80 on Monday. He drew post 16 for the Derby.

“He had an awfully good work yesterday and he’s done awful well since he’s been at Churchill. Even before all that I wouldn’t have been surprised if he’d been the post-time favorite,” McGaughey said. “The biggest thing I’m hoping is we get there Saturday as well as we’re doing right now and get something done that afternoon.”

Orb is one of three graded stakes winners this year by Malibu Moon, who ranks fourth on the 2013 General Sire list. His progeny have earned in excess of $3 million this year.
