Prospective, bred by Spendthrift Farm and sire by their top stallion Malibu Moon, surpassed the $700,000 in earnings with a length and a quarter victory in the $150,000 Delta Mile Saturday night at Delta Downs.
Malibu Moon has 14 stakes winners in 2012 and is ranked ninth on this year's General Sire list with $7,355,945 in progeny earnings. Prospective, with graded stakes wins in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2), Grey S. (G3) and Ohio Derby (G3) earlier this year, is the leading earner for his sire.
Facing older horses for the first time in his career, 3-year-old Prospective had just one horse beat in the early stages of the Delta Mile. Prospective angled off the rail on the final turn and put in a powerful bid through the stretch to win on a track rated fast in 1:38.57.
“There was a lot of speed in front of me and from the quarter pole home he was flying,” said jockey Miguel Mena, who rode the winner for owner John Oxley and trainer Mark Casse.
Prospective is now a now a six-time stakes winner in his career, and has earned $706,235. Oxley bought the dark bay colt, out of the Awesome Again mare Spirited Away, for $250,000 at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling sale.
