Papacoolpapacool won a three-way battle in the stretch to take the $75,000 Pasadena S. for 3-year-olds by 1 ½ lengths Saturday at Santa Anita.
The bay Kentucky-bred is the fourth stakes winner for second-year sire Temple City, who finished 2014 ranked sixth on the Freshman Sire list.
Ridden by Elvis Trujillo, Papacoolpapacool was right on the pace for the entire mile trip. After placed in third less than a length from the front for the first seven furlongs, he went three wide to hit the front in mid-stretch. With Anytime Anyplace and Soul Driver providing pressure, Papacoolpapacool dug in to inch clear late, getting the distance in 1:36.55 over the firm turf.
“It was a perfect trip,” Trujillo said. “At the three-eighths pole, I saw that Soul Driver was moving too early so I waited a little bit. Once we moved out, my horse was gone.”
The victory, worth $47,700, increased Papacoolpapacool’s career earnings to $145,350, with three wins in seven starts. It was his second straight win on the track’s turf course.
