Top-10 first-crop sire Archarcharch’s Toews On Ice racked up the second stakes win of his young career with a sharp-looking 4 ½-length score in Sunday’s $70,000 Speakeasy S. at Santa Anita Park.
With Victor Espinoza aboard, Toews On Ice was in hot pursuit of Big Finish, who sped through a half-mile in :45.10. After a brief duel in upper stretch, the dark bay put away his foe and rolled through the final furlong to get the six furlongs in 1:09.74.
“I had a good outside post and he broke in front,” said Espinoza, who drove to the lead leaving the quarter pole. “I was trying to let him run and open up a length but Big Finish (who broke from post three in a field of five) wanted the lead so I sat back a little bit. He did things easily. He’s still learning and some horses need one or two races to really focus and he’s one of those.”
Toews On Ice, who is named for multiple Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews, won the $100,000 Barretts Juvenile S. a month ago, is now 2-0-2 in four starts and has earned $115,200 for owners Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman.
Archarcharch ranks in the top five on the 2015 Freshman Sire list in both stakes horses and winners and the top 10 in progeny earnings. The Spendthrift stallion will stand the 2016 season for $5,000 live foal.
