Warrior’s Reward, G1 winner by Medaglia d’Oro, to Spendthrift Australia

Wednesday, April 22, 2015
Spendthrift Australia has announced that Warrior’s Reward, the Grade 1-winning son of Medaglia d’Oro, will be the first of its stallions to shuttle to Australia and participate in the farm’s renowned Share The Upside Program starting in 2015.

Warrior’s Reward will offer Australian breeders a similar opportunity as American breeders received through the Share The Upside Program when Warrior’s Reward retired to stud in the US. His Share The Upside fee will be $13,750 Inc GST, and will also be offered at $11,000 Inc GST on a standard live foal contract.

“Warrior’s Reward was the first Grade 1-winning colt sired by Medaglia d’Oro, and he’s already enjoyed early success passing on his great looks, pedigree, and class to his first crop of runners in America, which includes a contender in next week’s Kentucky Derby,” said B. Wayne Hughes, owner of Spendthrift Australia.

“Warrior’s Reward sold out quickly on Share The Upside in America, and breeders who took advantage of the program now have a lifetime breeding right in an up-and-coming young sire whose first crop was so successful that we were able to increase his stud fee on the open market from US$15,000 to US$25,000,” Hughes added. “Going into the 2015 breeding season in America, Warrior’s Reward shares were trading for US$94,500, which is over three times more than the Share The Upside investment for the breeder. The program works, and we’ve proven that in America with several stallions.”

Grade 1 winner Warrior’s Reward was Medaglia d’Oro’s fastest son in North America on the track, earning the co-highest Beyer Speed Figure by a 3-year-old in his crop with a 113. His progeny have also been precocious and fast, siring several debut-winning 2-year-olds and ranking on the Leading Freshman Sires List in North America a season ago. In 2015, his 3-year-olds are led by Kentucky Derby (G1) contender Tencendur, recent runner-up in the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) at Aqueduct.

Share The Upside is a straightforward, breeder-friendly program. There are a limited number of opportunities per stallion, and the offer is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Breeders can secure a spot with a $275 one-time deposit, and then sign two stands and nurses contracts to breed a mare in 2015 and 2016. Once two foals have been produced and the stud fees have been paid on both live foals, the breeder earns a lifetime breeding right starting as early as the 2017 breeding season. The breeding right continues annually and throughout the breeding life of the stallion, and there are no further expenses to the breeder associated with the care and advertising of the stallion.
