Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for Don't Get Mad
Don’t Get Mad is a multiple graded stakes winner of almost $800,000 who was also beaten little more than three lengths in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
By a Champion siring son of A.P. Indy, he has a pedigree which is completely free of Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer.
The Mr. Prospector line has supplied the dams of at least 40 A.P. Indy stakes winners, including graded winer For All We Know, by Don’t Get Mad’s sire, Stephen Got Even, out of a Mr. Prospector mare. In addition to Mr. Prospector himself, Mr. Prospector line stallions who are broodmare sires of stakes winners by A.P. Indy line stallions include Fappiano (whose son, Quiet American, is broodmare sire of two A.P. Indy graded winners, including Bernardini), Allen’s Prospect, Forty Niner, Seeking the Gold, Machiavellian, Afleet, Silver Ghost, Rubiano, Strike Gold, Unbridled, Woodman and Distinctive Pro . A.P. Indy has also sired four stakes winners, two of them grade one out of mares by Alydar, like Mr. Prospector, a son of Raise a Native.
Stephen Got Even’s Champion, Stevie Wonderboy is out of a mare by A.P. Indy's half-brother, Summer Squall, giving inbreeding to Weekend Surprise, dam of A.P. Indy and Summer Squall. Summer Squall is a Storm Bird/Secretariat cross, as is Storm Cat, and since A.P. Indy and his son, Pulpit, both have graded stakes winners out of Storm Cat mares, Storm Cat and his sons look well worth trying here. Stephen Got Even also has a grade one winner out of mare descending from Bold Ruler through Secretariat. Other branches of the Northern Dancer line which have worked well with A.P. Indy include Deputy Minister, Nijinsky II, Danzig, Lyphard, Dixieland Band, Nureyev, El Gran Senor, Sovereign Dancer and Magesterial. A.P. Indy has also had a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Clever Trick, who is by Northern Dancer's fellow Nearctic son, Icecapade.
The cross of A.P. Indy over mares from the Turn-to/Hail to Reason line has been a less prolific one, but has produced some top class individuals. Stephen Got Even already has a graded stakes placed two-year-old out of a mare by a son of his own broodmare sire Cox's Ridge, giving a 3 x 3 inbreeding to that horse. Stephen Got Even's graded stakes winner, A.P. Indy also has graded stakes winners out of mares descending from Hail to Reason through Roberto and his son, Kris S., and Roberto has also worked well with Don’t Get Mad’s female line. Hail to Reason might also do well here through Stop the Music and his son Cure the Blues, and Drone.
A.P. Indy has also sired graded stakes winners out of mares by Pleasant Colony and his son, Pleasant Tap. Pleasant Colony is by the Ribot stallion, His Majesty, and A.P. Indy has also sired a grade one winner out of a mare by Ribot's grandson, Hoist the Flag (by Tom Rolfe).
Stephen Got Even has a second dam by Blushing Groom, and it could also be worth reintroducing his strain here. Blushing Groom is by Red God, a horse whose dam is three-quarters related to Tom Fool, and bringing in Tom Fool through Buckpasser could work well here. Sources include Buckaroo (sire of Spend a Buck, Montbrook and Lite the Fuse), Buckfinder, Bucksplasher, Silver Buck (sire of Silver Charm), L’Enjoleur, Norcliffe (sire of At the Threshold and Groovy, grandsire of Lil E. Tee), Settlement Day and State Dinner.
