Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for Malibu Moon

The sire of 57 stakes winners, 19 graded winners, and eight grade one winners, Malibu Moon is firmly established as one A.P. Indy’s most important sons, and one of the Nation’s leading sires.

Malibu Moon is out of a mare by Mr Prospector, but when bred back over Mr. Prospector line mares he has sired nine stakes winners. His Champion Declan’s Moon is out of a mare by Norquestor (a son of Conquistador Cielo, who is also broodmare sire of two other Malibu Moon stakes winners). From the Gone West branch he has grade one winner Malibu Prayer out of a mare by Grand Slam (like Norquestor, a Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Mr. Greeley, which also suggests trying mares by Elusive Quality or Speightstown. From the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector Malibu Moon is sire of a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Quiet American, and stakes winners out of mares by Press Card, Rubiano and Pentelicus (a three-parts-brother to Unbridled, the sire of Unbridled’s Song). Mr. Prospector is a Raise a Native line sire, and Malibu Moon has also worked well over mares descending from Raise a Native through Mr. Prospector’s close relative, Alydar, including CCA Oaks (G1) winner Funny Moon out of a mare by Easy Goer. Staying with Raise a Native, Malibu Moon is also sire of grade two winner Luna Vega out of a mare by Rock Royalty; graded winner Rodman out of a mare by Affirmed; and Malibu Moonshine, a multiple stakes winner over over $500,000, out of a mare by Coastal (by Majestic Prince, who could be introduced through Maria’s Mon).

Malibu Moon has also enjoyed considerable success with Northern Dancer line mares. From Danzig line mares Malibu Moon has sired three stakes winners – a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Danehill, and stakes winners out of mares by Sea Hero, Be My Chief and Lost Soldier.  Malibu Moon has two stakes winners out of mares by Storm Cat, and another out of a mare by that horse’s son, Hennessy. This suggest physically compatable mares by such as Giant’s Causeway, Tale of the Cat, Stormy Atlantic, Forest Wildcat, Forestry and Tabasco Cat. Malibu Moon has sired grade two winner Sweet August Moon out of a mare by Royal Academy, a son of Nijinsky II, who is closely related to Storm Cat, and he has also sired graded winner Malibu Pier (dam by Lomitas) and a stakes winner out of a mare by Sky Classic, both from this branch of Northern Dancer. Malibu Moon is demonstrating a growin affinity for the Deputy Minister line, siring stakes winners out of mares by Awesome Again, Silver Deputy, French Deputy and Mr. Purple, which suggests trying daughters of Dehere, Touch Gold and Salt Lake. Malibu Moon has stakes winers out of mares by both Dixieland Band and his son Citidancer which would encourage trying daughters of Dixie Union. He also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Nureyev. Malibu Moon also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Wild Again, who is by Northern Dancer's fellow Nearctic son, Icecapade. Icecapade’s son, Clever Trick, might also work here.

Malibu Moon’s grade one winning filly, Malibu Mint, is out of a mare by Key to the Mint, by Graustark, from the Ribot sire line. He also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Cormorant, who is by His Majesty, a brother to Graustark. His Majesty could also be brought in through Pleasant Colony and his son Pleasant Tap (both broodmare sires of A.P. Indy graded stakes winners). It is also worth considering bringing in Ribot through Tom Rolfe and his son, Hoist the Flag.

Malibu Moon has been extremely successful with mares from the Turn-To line. From the Roberto branch he has multiple grade one winner Devil May Care out of a mare by Red Ransom, and the very talented By the Light from a daughter of Major Impact. His grade two winning son Perfect Moon is out of a mare by a son of Halo; grade two winner Moon Catcher, out of a mare by Smarten (by Cyane); stakes winner Malibu Sue is out of a mare  by Lord Parham (by Lord Gaylord, by Sir Gaylord), and stakes winner Moonlit Habit out of a mare by Habitony (by another Sir Gaylord son, Habitat). Sir Gaylord could also be introduced through Lord Avie. Malibu Moon’s sire, A.P. Indy has also sired grade one winners out of mares by Turn-to/Hail to Reason descendants Cox's Ridge and Cure the Blues.

Malibu Moon has done extremely well with mares descending from Bold Ruler through Bold Bidder, getting stakes winners out of mares by Spectacular Bid, Caveat and his sire, Cannonade. Malibu Moon also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Compelling Sound, who is from Malibu Moon’s own male line, that of Seattle Slew. From the Nasrullah branch of the Blushing Groom line Malibu Moon has grade one winner Life at Ten from a daughter of Rahy and graded stakes winner Sara Louise out of a mare by Mt. Livermore.

Malibu Moon has three stakes winners out of mares from the In Reality line, including grade one winner Ask The Moon out of a mare by Valid Appeal (sire of Successful Appeal, Valid Wager and Valid Expectations), and by Skywalker, and his son Bertrando, from the Relaunch branch (which could also be introduced through Tiznow and Officer).

Malibu Moon’s broodmare sire, Mr. Prospector, is out of a mare by Nashua, and duplicating that horse has worked well, including through the previously mentioned Roberto, John Alden (a Prince John line stallion, out of a Nashua mare), and Noble Nashua. There is also a stakes winner from the Prince John line through Summing (from the Speak John/Verbatim branch), and he is also sire of stakes winners out of mares by Thirty Eight Paces (by Nodoouble),and Amerrico (by Dr. Fager)
