Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for Malibu Moon

The sire of over 100 stakes winners, and 43 graded winners, Malibu Moon is firmly established as one A.P. Indy’s most important sons, and is again among the Nation’s leading sires in 2017.

Malibu Moon is out of a mare by Mr. Prospector, but he has enjoyed significant success when bred back over Mr. Prospector line mares. This includes Kentucky Derby (gr. I) hero, Orb, out of a mare by Unbridled, and grade one winner Moonshine Memories out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song, from the Fappiano branch which has also worked through Quiet American and Rubiano. Malibu Moon has a champion out of a mare by a son of Conquistador Cielo. He has a grade one winner out of a mare by Grand Slam and stakes winners out of mares by Elusive Quality and Speightstown (all by Gone West), and graded winners out of mares by Kingmambo, Smart Strike and Distorted Humor.

Malibu Moon has also enjoyed considerable success with Northern Dancer line mares. The Storm Cat branch has been very successful, including grade one winners out of mares by Giant’s Causeway and Bernstein, graded stakes winners out of Forest Wildcat, Tactical Cat and High Yield, and stakes winners from daughters and granddaughters of Hennessy. Malibu Moon has a grade two winner out of a mare by Royal Academy, a son of Nijinsky II, and from the same line, a stakes winner out of a mare by Sky Classic. His grade one winner Heavenly Love is out of a mare by Deputy Minister, and from that branch of Northern Dancer, Malibu Moon also has a graded winner from a mare by Awesome Again, and stakes winners from daughters Silver Deputy and French Deputy. The Danzig branch of Northern Dancer has also been successful.

Malibu Moon has crossed very well with mares from Roberto branch of Hail to Reason, siring grade one winners out of mares by Red Ransom and Kris S., and a graded winner out of a mare by Dynaformer. He has also done well when crossed with Hail to Reason via Halo, including through Southern Halo and his son More Than Ready and Saint Ballado. From Blushing Groom line mares Malibu Moon has a grade one winner from a daughter of Rahy and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Mt. Livermore.
