Alan Porter Breeding Analysis for Notional

A son of In Excess – also the sire of Indian Charlie – Notional recorded outstanding performances at two, three and four. At two, he made an impressive winning debut, earning a Beyer Speedfigure of 105. At three, he captured the San Rafael Stakes (G2) and Risen Star Stakes (G3) and ran a close second to Scat Daddy in the Florida Derby (G1). And at four, he captured the Salvator Mile (G3) with a 109 Beyer.

Notional is by the exceptional racehorse, and extremely successful sire, In Excess, as is Indian Charlie, sire of Eclipse Award winning Champions Uncle Mo, Fleet Indian and Indian Blessing. From the same branch of the Frizette family that has produced Mr. Prospector and Seattle Slew, Notional is closely inbred to that female line through La Morlaye, granddam of In Excess’ sire, classic winner Siberian Express.

Crossing over Mr. Prospector line mares has worked well for In Excess and has been particularly successful for Indian Charlie. Among branches of Mr. Prospector that have produced stakes winners for this pair are Fappiano via Quiet American, Unbridled/Unbridled’s Song; Crafty Prospector; Carson City and his son Flying Chevron – broodmare sire of Indian Charlie’s Champion Indian Blessing – which suggests mares by such as Lord Carson, City Zip and Cuvee); Conquistador Cielo (whose son Marquetry might be interesting here); Afleet – broodmare sire of Indian Charlie’s Champion Fleet Indian – and his son, Northern Afleet (sire of Afleet Alex); Silver Ghost; Fortunate Prospect; Gulch (sire of Thunder Gulch); Black Tie Affair, by Miswaki, and himself sire of Formal Gold); Tank’s Prospect and Smart Strike. From other branches of the Raise a Native line, there have been stakes winners out of mares by Affirmed (who might work very well here), Majestic Prince and Alydar (through Turkoman).

The other great sire from the Frizette family, Seattle Slew, has also worked under In Excess and Indian Charlie, including throught Slewpy, Seattle Song and Slewacide, and more commercial branches of Seattle Slew, such as A.P. Indy (who can be brought in through Pulpit sire of Sky Mesa and Tapit Malibu Moon, Mineshaft, Old Trieste, Stephen Got Even, and Jump Start), Capote (sire of Boston Harbor and Matty G) and Slew o’ Gold can also be considered. Seattle Slew’s grandsire, Boldnesian, has also proved effective under In Excess through Bold Ruckus.

Notional is out of a mare from the Northern Dancer line, and crossing back over that line should work well through Sadler’s Wells (broodmare sire of a classic winner by In Excess, and represented in the U.S. by El Prado, Kitten’s Joy, Artie Schiller and Medaglia d’Oro), Lyphard (through Falstaff), Danzig (including through Pine Bluff), Northern Baby, Nijinsky II (through Strawberry Road, and also worth considering through Royal Academy), Storm Bird (and his sons Hermitage, Summer Squall and Storm Cat, who is available through such as Giant’s Causeway, Forestry, Hennessy, Forest Wildcat, Stormy Atlantic, Tale of the Cat, Bernstein, Storm Boot and Tactical Cat), Sovereign Dancer (through Leo Castelli, broodmare sire of Indian Charlie), Dixieland Band, and even back over Notional’s own broodmare sire line, that of Vice Regent/Deputy Minister. Northern Dancer’s sire, Nearctic, has also done well with Indian Charlie via Icecapade, through both the Clever Trick and Wild Again branches of this line.

From the Turn-to/Hail to Reason line, Indian Charlie sired the brilliant Uncle Mo out a mare by Arch (by Kris S.), from the Roberto branch, while In Excess has a grade one winner out of a mare by Kris S. son, Prized. We can also note that both In Excess and Indian Charlie have worked very well with the  Halo branch of Hail to Reason (which might be introduced via mares descending from Saint Ballado and hs brother Devil’s Bag both broodmare sires of Indian Charlie stakes winners – and Southern Halo/More Than Ready). In Excess also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Cox’s Ridge, a grandson of Turn-to.

Other strains that have found success under this mail line include Never Bend, Damascus (including through Time For A Change and Cutlass), In Reality, Round Table, and the brothers His Majesty and Graustark.
