Alan Porter’s 2020 Breeding Analysis for Cinco Charlie

The speedy and precocious Cinco Charlie won seven stakes events, four of them, including the Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) at two. In doing so, he proved himself one the fastest sons of Indian Charlie, an outstanding sire, and now a sire of sires, including Uncle Mo.

Indian Charlie enjoyed a remarkable degree of success with mares from the Mr. Prospector line. His multiple Eclipse Award-winning Champion Indian Blessing is out of a mare by Flying Chevron (by Carson City, who is also broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Indian Charlie, and can be brought through City Zip, Lord Carson, Good and Tough, Cuvee, Pollard’s Vision and Five Star Day). Indian Charlie’s Champion Fleet Indian is out of a mare by Afleet, graded stakes winner Adios Charlie is out of a mare by that horse’s son, Northern Afleet, and his son, Afleet Alex is broodmare sire of Uncle Mo grade one winner Dream Tream. The cross of Indian Charlie with mares from the Gone West line has produced graded stakes winners out of mares by Speightstown and Elusive Quality (broodmare sire of a grade one winner by Uncle Mo), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Proud Citizen, also suggesting daughters of Mr. Greeley and Grand Slam. There are also Indian Charlie stakes winners out of Mr. Prospector line stallions Silver Ghost (a parallel cross to the dam of Cinco Charlie), Crafty Prospector, Tank’s Prospect, Fortunate Prospect, Fusaichi Pegasus, Gulch (sire of Thunder Gulch), Black Tie Affair (by Miswaki, and sire of Formal Gold), Smart Strike, Gold Fever (by Forty Niner, sire of Distorted Humor. End Sweep, Coronado’s Quest, Luhuk, Banker’s Gold, Peace Rules, Roar, Tactical Advantage and Twining, and grandsire of Trippi).

Cinco Charlie is an example of the very successful cross of Indian Charlie over mares descending from Mr. Prospector through Fappiano. It should pay to breed him back over Fappiano line mares, and for Indian Charlie and sons this cross has also already produced a grade one winner out of a mare by Empire Maker, graded winners out of mares by Rubiano, Unbridled and his son, Untuttable, and Quiet American, as well as two stakes winners out of mares by Unbridled’s Song, and a stakes winner by a close relative to Cinco Charlie out of a mare by Red Bullet. Other Fappiano sources include Even the Score, Rockport Harbor, Eurosilver, Songandaprayer and Werblin (all by Unbridled’s Song) as well as Empire Maker, Broken Vow, Grindstone and Birdstone.

Indian Charlie has also enjoyed considerable success with mares from the Northern Dancer line. He has proved to be very well-suited by mares from the Vice Regent/Deputy Minister branch, including graded winner Indian Firewater out of a mare by Touch Gold, and stakes winners out of mares by Deputy Minister and Domasca Dan. The Deputy Minister line can also be brought in through Dehere (whose brother, Defrere is broodmare sire of a Silver Deputy (who should do very well here, and who is also sire of Posse), French Deputy, Awesome Again, Salt Lake, Forest Camp, Graeme Hall and Deputy Commander. Indian Charlie also has four stakes winners out of mares by Dixieland Band (sire of Dixie Union, Dixie Brass, Dixieland Heat, Chimes Band, Citidancer and Hook and Ladder; and grandsire of High Cotton, the broodmare sire of an Indian Charlie line grade one winner). From the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer, Indian Charlie is sire of stakes winners out of mares by Pine Bluff and Ghazi (by Polish Navy), and could also work over daughters of such as Belong to Me, Langfuhr, Boundary, Chief’s Crown, Concerto, Danzig Connection, Exchange Rate, Honor Grades, Lost Soldier, War Front, War Chant, Hard Spun, and Katowice.

Out of mares from the Storm Cat/Storm Bird line sons of Indian Charlie have sired Champion and Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist from a mare by Forestry (sire of Discreet Cat and Shackleford), and by a close relative to Cinco Charlie, grade one winner Comma To The Top, out of a mare by Stormy Atlantic. There are also Indian Charlie line stakes winners out of mares by Storm Cat himself, Giant’s Causeway, (sire of First Samurai), Freud, Scat Daddy (a son of Johannesburg, and grandson of Hennessy), Cat Thief and Lion Hearted. This also suggests trying mares by Stormin Fever (bred on the same cross as Stormy Atlantic), Tale of the Cat (and his son, Lion Heart), Storm Boot, Storm Creek, Sea of Secrets, Forest Wildcat (sire of D’Wildcat and Wildcat Heir), Harlan’s Holiday (sire of Into Mischief), Bernstein, Mountain Cat, Sir Cat, High Yield, Tactical Cat and Tabasco Cat.

In Excess, the sire of Indian Charlie, was responsible for a classic winner out of a mare by Northern Dancer son, Sadler’s Wells, who could be brought in through El Prado (sire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller). Sadler’s Wells is a three-quarters brother to Nureyev, and his son, Unusual Heat, is broodmare sire of Uncle Mo grade one winner Mo Forza. Indian Charlie also has a stakes winner out of mare by the Nijinsky II line sire, Strawberry Road, and other Nijinsky II line broodmare sires include Royal Academy and Sky Classic.

Indian Charlie and his sons have sired nine stakes winners out of Seattle Slew line mares, grade one winners of mares by A.P. Indy and his son, Malibu Moon, with other sources of A.P. Indy including Pulpit, Mineshaft (broodmare sire of an Uncle Mo stakes winner), Golden Missile, Old Trieste, Stephen Got Even, Congrats, Flatter, Bernardini (broodmare sire of an Uncle Mo grade one winner), Tapit, Sky Mesa and Jump Start). From other branches the Seattle Slew line, there are also stakes winners out of daughters of Boston Harbor (by Capote), Slewacide, Seattle Song and Eastover Court. Seattle Slew is a grandson of Boldnesian, and from the Bold Ruckus branch of that line, there is a stakes winner by Indian Charlie out of a mare by Bold Revenue and the line could also be brought in through Beau Genius.

Indian Charlie’s brilliant Champion Two-Year-Old Uncle Mo is out of a mare by Arch, as is Uncle Mo’s own multiple grade one winner Bast. Arch is a son of Kris S. (also sire of Prized, Kissin Kris and You and I), from the Roberto branch of Hail to Reason. Other Roberto line stallions include Lear Fan, Dynaformer (broodmare sire of an Indian Charlie graded winner and a stakes winner by a son of Indian Charlie), Silver Hawk, Red Ransom and Repriced (broodmare sire of an Indian Charlie stakes winner). Cinco Charlie has a second dam by Hail to Reason son, Halo, but it should be worth crossing him back over Halo line mares. On this cross we find Champion Roxy Music out of a mare by Saint Ballado (sire of Saint Liam, Sweetsouthernsaint, Yankee Victor and Captain Bodgit), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Clear Course. It should also be worth trying Halo through Saint Ballado’s brother, Devil’s Bag (sire of Devil His Due and Diablo), Jolie’s Halo, Halo’s Image and Southern Halo and More Than Ready (a reverse cross to the dam of Cinco Charlie). It would also be worth considering bringing in the Stop the Music branch of Hail to Reason – a good combination for Halo – and available through Cure the Blues (sire of American Chance and Tethra) and Temperence Hill.

There are stakes winners by Indian Charlie and his sons out of mares by Orientate and his sire, Mt. Livermore (also sire of Housebuster and Peaks and Valleys), and there is also a graded stakes winner by Indian Charlie out of a mare by Holy Bull (sire of Macho Uno and Flashy Bull).
