Alan Porter’s 2020 Breeding Analysis for Dominus

A multiple grade two winner, who captured graded stakes on dirt and turf, Dominus is by two-time Leading Sire Smart Strike – whose sons Curlin, English Channel and Lookin at Lucky, all classic sires – out of a multiple stakes winning mare. He is off to an impressive start with five stakes winners in his first crop.

The cross of Smart Strike and sons over mares descending from Northern Dancer through Deputy Minister, has enjoyed outstanding success, and Dominus already has two-year-old stakes winner All Right out of a mare by Deputy Minister son, Touch Gold and stakes winner Bitacora out of a mare by Deputy Minister son, Tejabo. Smart Strike sired Horse of the Year Curlin and millionaire Tenpins out of mares by Deputy Minister himself, and English Channel has grade one winner V. E. Day out of a mare by that horse, while Awesome Again (sire of Ghostzapper) is broodmare sire of Smart Strike line grade one winner Keen Ice, and there is also a Smart Strike line grade one winner out of a mare by a son of Deputy Commander. Multiple grade one winner Curalina is out of a mare by Graeme Hall, a son of Dehere, and English Channel grade one winner Heart to Heart is out of a mare by Silver Deputy. There are also graded stakes winners from daughters of Deputy Minister horses French Deputy, Silver Deputy and Salt Lake. Deputy Minister’s sire, Vice Regent, is also sire of Regal Classic, who gives inbreeding to the family of Smart Strike, and is broodmare sire of two Smart Strike stakes winners.

The cross of Smart Strike and sons with mares from the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer has been an outstanding one with nearly 50 stakes winners. These include Champion and classic winner Lookin At Lucky (out of a mare by Belong to Me, who has proved to be excellent under Smart Strike); Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Country House (out of a mare by War Chant); Champion Two-Year-Old Good Magic (out of a mare by Hard Spun); Champion Soaring Free (out of a mare by Danzig himself); and grade one winner Shadow Cast (dam by Dayjur, who also gives inbreeding to Mr. Prospector), as well as stakes winners from daughters of Ascot Knight, Boundary, Danehill, Chief’s Crown (and his grandson, Bellamy Road), Langfuhr, Polish Numbers, Pine Bluff, Foxhoud and Zieten, which also suggests mares by younger Danzig sons, including Exchange Rate and War Front.

There are 22 stakes winners by Smart Strike and his sons out of Nijinsky II line mares, including a grade one winner out of a mare by Strawberry Road, and a classic winner out of a mare by Sky Classic (who gives inbreeding to the family of Smart Strike) and stakes winners out of mares by Generous (by Caerleon), Green Dancer and Fred Astaire. Royal Academy also appeals.

From the cross with Northern Dancer via Nureyev line mares, we find classic winner Palace Malice out of a mare by Royal Anthem, and Champion English Channel out of mare by his sire, Theatrical, with Nureyev also available through Atticus, Fasliyev, Stravinsky (broodmare sire of two Smart Strike line graded winners) and Spinning World. The cross of Smart Strike and sons with mares from the sire line of Nureyev’s three-quarters brother Sadler’s Wells has produced more than 20 stakes winners. This includes grade one winners out of mares by Sadler’s Wells and Horse Chestnut, and graded winners out of mares by Kitten’s Joy (by El Prado, also sire of Medaglia d’Oro and Artie Schiller) and Powerscourt.

Dominus has stakes winner P Boo out of a mare by Freud, a brother to Giant’s Causeway (broodmare sire of three Smart Strike line stakes winners, and sire of First Samurai), and a son of Storm Cat. There is also a Smart Strike grade one winner out of a mare by Storm Cat, and Storm Cat son, Sea of Secrets, is broodmare sire of Smart Strike’s Champion My Miss Aurelia. With other Storm Cat sons including Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Heart), Storm Boot, Forestry, Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg – broodmare sire of a Smart Strike line stakes winner –and sire of Scat Daddy – also broodmare sire of a Smart Strike line stakes winner), Stormy Atlantic (broodmare sire of a Smart Strike graded winner), Stormin Fever, Forest Wildcat, Cat Thief, Tabasco Cat and Tactical Cat. Continuing on the cross with Northern Dancer line mares, there is Smart Strike line Champion out of a mare by Gate Dancer (by Sovereign Dancer), and a two-year-old grade one winner out of a mare by El Gran Senor, and there are also stakes winners out of mares by Dixieland Band and his sons Dixie Union (sire of Union Rags), Dixieland Brass and Citidancer. We could also consider the Icecapade branch of Nearctic, through Wild Again (broodmare sire of three Smart Strike stakes winners).

Dominus has a stakes winner out of a mare by Chief Seattle, a son of Seattle Slew. Smart Strike has a grade one winner out of a mare by A.P. Indy and Curlin has champion Stellar Wind out of a mare by Malibu Moon, and there are also Smart Strike line graded winners out of mares by and Bernardini, Pulpit (and a graded winners out of a mare by his son Tapit) and Mineshaft (sire of Discreetly Mine and Dialed In). Other A.P. Indy sons include Flatter, Congrats, Stephen Got Even and Golden Missile. Other branches of A.P. Indy’s sire, Seattle Slew, to work under Smart Strike include Vindication (broodmare sire of Smart Strike line classic winner Exaggerator), Fast Play, Avenue of Flags, General Meeting and Capote (sire of Boston Harbor – the broodmare sire of a Smart Strike line grade one winner – and Matty G).

Smart Strike is also beginning to show an affinity for the Blushing Groom line, particularly through Rahy (broodmare sire of Smart Strike’s grade one winner Furthest Land), and he also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Runaway Groom (sire of Cherokee Run). From the Roberto branch of the Hail to Reason line, Smart Strike and his sons have stakes winners out of mares by Lear Fan, Silver Hawk and Red Ransom. From the Halo branch of the Hail to Reason line, there is a stakes winner by a Smart Strike son out of a mare by Saint Ballado, and another out of a mare by that horse’s son, Yankee Victor. This would also suggest introducing Saint Ballado’s brother, Devil’s Bag (sire of Devil His Due and Diablo), and trying Halo through More Than Ready. From the Caro line, there is a Smart Strike graded stakes winner out a mare by With Approval, and a stakes winner by a son of Smart Strike out of a mare by Cozzene.

Dominus has sired the multiple stakes winning Chanel’s Legacy out of a mare by Value Plus, making her one of four stakes winners by Smart Strike and sons out of Unbridled’s Song mares, a cross that can be reproduced through daughters of Dunkirk, Eurosilver, Even The Score, First Defence, Half Ours, Midshipman, Rockport Harbor and Zensational.
