Alan Porter’s 2020 Breeding Analysis for Malibu Moon

The sire of 122 stakes winners, and 49 graded winners, Malibu Moon is firmly established as one A.P. Indy’s most important sons, and was a grade one sire again in 2019.

Malibu Moon is out of a mare by Mr. Prospector, but he has enjoyed great success when bred back over Mr. Prospector. His Kentucky Derby (G1) hero, Orb, is out of a mare by Unbridled, from the Fappiano branch, and he also has grade one winner Moonshine Memories and multiple graded winner Farrell out of mares by Unbridled’s Song. On the cross with mares from other branches of the Fappiano line, Malibu Moon has also sired a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Quiet American (and a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s son, Real Quiet, the sire of Midnight Lute), as well as stakes winners out of mares by Rubiano, Pentelicus, Roy and Press Card. It may also be worth considering daughters of Broken Vow and Empire Maker.

Malibu Moon’s Champion, Declan’s Moon, is out of a mare by Norquestor (a son of Conquistador Cielo, who is also broodmare sire of a graded stakes winner by Malibu Moon, and can be found via Marquetry and Artax). From the Gone West branch he has grade one winner Malibu Prayer out of a mare by Grand Slam (like Norquestor, a Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross), and stakes winners out of mares by Elusive Quality (sire of Quality Road) and Mr. Greeley, which also suggests trying mares by Speightstown. Out of a mare by Kingmambo (sire of Lemon Drop Kid), Malibu Moon has sired grade two winner Noble Moon. Malibu Moon’s graded stakes winner Stanford is out of a mare by Distorted Humor, from the Forty Niner branch. Graded winner Moonlit Promise is out of a mare by Smart Strike, suggesting daughters of Curlin, Lookin At Lucky and English Channel. He also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Machiavellian (sire of Street Cry, and grandsire of Street Sense).

Mr. Prospector is a Raise a Native-line sire, and Malibu Moon has also worked well over mares descending from Raise a Native through Mr. Prospector’s close relative, Alydar, including CCA Oaks winner Funny Moon out of a mare by Easy Goer. Staying with Raise a Native, Malibu Moon is also sire of grade two winner Luna Vega out of a mare by Rock Royalty; graded winner Rodman out of a mare by Affirmed; and Malibu Moonshine, a multiple stakes winner over $500,000, out of a mare by Coastal (by Majestic Prince, who could be introduced through Maria’s Mon).

Malibu Moon has also enjoyed considerable success with Northern Dancer line mares. From Danzig line mares Malibu Moon has a graded stakes winners out of mares by Danzig himself, and his son Danehill, and stakes winners out of mares by Langfuhr, Sea Hero, Be My Chief and Lost Soldier. This would make mares by younger Danzig sons such as Hard Spun, Exchange Rate and War Front appealing. Malibu Moon has sired 18 stakes winners out of Storm Cat line mares, including multiple grade one winner Gormley out of a mare by Bernstein; grade one winner Eden’s Moon and graded winner Donegal Moon out of mares by Giant’s Causeway; grade two winners out of mares by Forest Wildcat and Tactical Cat; and stakes winners from daughter of Cactus Ridge and his sons Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg; granddam of Scat Daddy), Tactical Cat, High Yield, Discreet Cat (by Forestry) Lion Hearted and Menifee. This suggests mares by such as Tale of the Cat, Stormy Atlantic, Harlan’s Holiday and his son Into Mischief, and Tabasco Cat. Malibu Moon has sired grade two winner Sweet August Moon out of a mare by Royal Academy, a son of Nijinsky II, who is closely related to Storm Cat, and he has also sired graded winner Malibu Pier (dam by Lomitas) and a stakes winner out of a mare by Sky Classic, both from this branch of Northern Dancer.

Malibu Moon is demonstrating a growing affinity for the Deputy Minister line, siring grade one winner Heavenly Love out of a mare by Deputy Minister himself, multiple graded stakes winner Prospective out of a mare by Awesome Again (sire of Ghostzapper), and stakes winners from daughters Silver Deputy, French Deputy and Mr. Purple, which also suggests trying Deputy Minister through such as Dehere, Touch Gold and Salt Lake. Malibu Moon has stakes winners out of mares by both Dixieland Band and his son Citidancer which would encourage trying daughters of Dixie Union. There is also a Malibu Moon graded stakes winner out of Northern Dancer son, Nureyev (sire of Theatrical), and a stakes winner out of a mare by El Prado (by Nureyev’s three-quarters brother, Sadler’s Wells), the sire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller. Malibu Moon also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Wild Again, who is by Northern Dancer’s fellow Nearctic son, Icecapade. Icecapade’s son, Clever Trick, might also work here.

Malibu Moon has been extremely successful with mares from the Turn-To line. From the Roberto branch he has grade one winners Devil May Care and Ransom The Moon out of mares by Red Ransom; two stakes winners, one graded, out of mares by Dynaformer; and the very talented By the Light from a daughter of Major Impact. Roberto might also work through Kris S., (broodmare sire of a Malibu Moon stakes winner, and sire of Arch, Prized, You and I and Rock Hard Ten) and Lear Fan. His grade two winning son Perfect Moon is out of a mare by a son of Halo, and from other Halo line mares, Malibu Moon has grade one winner Carina Mia, out of a mare by Southern Halo, brilliant juvenile filly Kauai Katie, and her graded winner sister Winding Way out of mares by Southern Halo son More Than Ready, well as a stakes winner out of a mare by Yankee Victor (a son of the Halo stallion, Saint Ballado, himself also the broodmare sire of a Malibu Moon stakes winner).

From the Blushing Groom line Malibu Moon has two stakes winners, grade one scorer Life at Ten from a daughter of Rahy and graded stakes winner Sara Louise out of a mare by Mt. Livermore. Out of mares from the In Reality line, Malibu Moon has grade one winner Ask The Moon out of a mare by Valid Appeal (sire of Successful Appeal, Valid Wager and Valid Expectations), and grade one winner Come Dancing (out of a mare by Tiznow, sire of Tiz Wonderful, Colonel John and Tizway) and stakes winners out of mares by Skywalker, and his son Bertrando, like Tiznow from the Relaunch branch (which could also be introduced through Officer).
