Alan Porter’s 2020 Breeding Analysis for Race Day

Race Day is an impressive multiple graded stakes winner by Tapit out of a half-sister to four- time grade one winner Lite Light, from a powerful branch of the La Troienne family. With four stakes winners in his first crop of two-year-olds, he was among the leading freshman of 2019.

Race Day has sired multiple stakes winner Consultora out of a mare by Tiznow, also broodmare sire of a grade one winner by a son of Tapit. Tiznow is a grandson of Relaunch, and there is a sister to that horse in Tapit’s pedigree. So far there are 18 stakes winners by Tapit and sons out of mares carrying Relaunch, and in addition to Tiznow (sire of Tiz Wonderful, Tizway, Gemologist and Colonel John), that strain might also be brought in through Skywalker, Bertrando and Officer and Put It Back. We should also note that there is also a Tapit stakes winner out of a mare by Glitterman, who is from this family, and is half-sister to the granddam of Tapit, and from the Valid Appeal branch of Relaunch’s sire, In Reality, a stakes winner out of a mare by Valid Wager, with Valid Appeal also appearing as sire of Valid Expectations and Successful Appeal.

From daughters of the Sadler’s Wells horse, El Prado, Tapit has sired grade one winner Laragh and graded winner White Rose, and he also has a stakes winner by that horse’s son, Medaglia d’Oro, which would also encourage trying daughters of Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller. Race Day himself has two-year-old stakes winner Mom’s Red Lipstick out of a mare by Warrior’s Reward a son of Medaglia d’Oro.

Sadler’s Wells is a branch of the Northern Dancer line, and Tapit has enjoyed remarkable success with mares from the Storm Cat branch of that line, and he and his sons have more than 30 stakes winners. These including Champion Monomoy Girl by a son of Tapit out of a mare by Henny Hughes, who is by Hennessy, himself the broodmare sire of a Tapit grade one winner, and sire of Johannesburg (sire of Scat Daddy), also broodmare sire of a Tapit stakes winner. Tapit line Champions Hansen and British Idiom are out of mares by Storm Cat sons Sir Cat and Mr. Sekiguchi. There are Tapit grade one winners from daughters of Tabasco Cat, Bluegrass Cat and Yankee Gentleman. Out mares by Harlan’s Holiday (sire of Into Mischief) there are three graded winners, and there is also a graded winner out of a mare by Menifee, who like Harlan’s Holiday is by Harlan. We can also note Tapit graded winners out of mares by Storm Cat line stallions Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir), Shamardal and his sire Giant’s Causeway (brother to Freud and sire of First Samurai), Forestry and Catienus, and five of graded stakes winners out of mares by Storm Cat himself. We can also note stakes winners out of mares by Stormin Fever, Pure Prize and City Place.

From the Deputy Minister branch of Northern Dancer, Tapit has sired outstanding grade one winners Frosted and Tapizar, from daughters of Tapit himself. Grade one winner American Gal is by a son of Tapit out of a mare by Ghostzapper (by Awesome Again). He also has graded stakes winner Delightful Joy out of a mare by Graeme Hall, a son of the Deputy Minister stallion, Dehere (also broodmare sire of a Tapit line stakes winner), a graded winner out of a mare by French Deputy, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Touch Gold. This would invite considering daughters of such Deputy Commander, Salt Lake and Silver Deputy (sire of Posse, Badge of Silver and Spring At Last). Tapit has also sired graded stakes winner Hightap out of a mare by Regal Classic, by Vice Regent, the sire of Deputy Minister.

Nijinsky II appears in the pedigree of several Tapit stakes winners, including in the broodmare sire line of grade one winner Tapitsfly (dam by Marlin, a son of Sword Dance) and graded winner Endymion (dam by Shadeed, the sire of Alydeed). It would also be possible to introduce Nijinsky II through Royal Academy (who is especially promising, being a close relative to Storm Cat), Seattle Dancer, Sky Classic and Strawberry Road (broodmare sire of a graded stakes winner by Tapit’s sire, Pulpit).

Out of mares from the Danzig line, Tapit has stakes winners from daughters of Boundary (sire of Big Brown), Belong to Me, Hard Spun, Anabaa and Danzig Connection. Danzig has also been very good with More Than Ready, the broodmare sire of Race Day, and other Danzig line stallions include Langfuhr, Ascot Knight, Polish Numbers (out of Champion Numbered Account, a sister to the dam of Woodman, who is broodmare sire of More Than Ready), Dayjur, Pine Bluff, Honor Grades, War Chant, Exchange Rate and War Front (who gives an appealing inbreeding to Fappiano). From the Dixieland Band branch of Northern Dancer, Tapit has three graded winners out of a daughter of Dixie Union.

Out of mares descending from Icecapade – a three-quarters relative to Northern Dancer – through Wild Again, Tapit has grade one winner Joyful Victory and graded winner War Echo out of mares by Wild Again himself, a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Milwaukee Brew, and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Wild Rush, and from the Clever Trick branch, a stakes winner out of a daughter of Phone Trick. Wild Again could also be brought in through Offlee Wild and Whiskey Wisdom (dam of Race Day stakes winner Race Home) and Phone Trick is also sire of Intidab, Caller I.D., Mazel Trick and Favorite Trick.

Tapit has enjoyed success with some specific branches of Mr. Prospector. He has a stakes winner out of a mare by Gone West; grade one winner Zazu and graded stakes winner Flashback out of a mare by Gone West son Mr. Greeley (sire of El Corredor); and graded stakes winner Bandbox out of a mare by Gone West son Grand Slam. This would encourage trying daughters of Speightstown, Elusive Quality and Proud Citizen. There also seems to be an affinity for the Forty Niner branch of Mr. Prospector, with grade one winner Constitution out of a daughter of Distorted Humor; grade one winner Dance Card out of a mare by Editor’s Note; as well as two stakes winners out of mares by Coronado’s Quest, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Banker’s Gold. Other potential Forty Niner line broodmare sires include Trippi, End Sweep, Jules, Luhuk and Twining. Tapit’s grade one winner Pretty City Dancer is out of a mare by Carson City also sire of City Zip (who should be particularly good here), Boone’s Mill, Cuvee (another who looks very promising), Five Star Day, Good And Tough, Pollard’s Vision and Lord Carson.

Tapit is out of a mare by the Fappiano line stallion, Unbridled, but he is sire of grade one winner Ring Weekend out of a mare by Fappiano line stallion, Cryptoclearance, and a stakes winner by out of a mare by his son, Crypto Star, inviting daughters of Candy Ride and Victory Gallop. Tapit also has Champion Unique Bella out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song, giving inbreeding to Unbridled. Sons of Unbridled’s Song include Rockport Harbor, First Defence (broodmare sire of a Tapit graded stakes winner), Old Fashioned, Half Ours, Dunkirk, Even The Score and Songandaprayer. From other branches of the Unbridled line come Broken Vow, Grindstone, Birdstone and Empire Maker. It could also pay to consider introducing Fappiano through Rubiano – a three-quarters brother to the dam of Tapit – and Quiet American (grandsire of Midnight Lute).

Tapit’s stakes winning and grade one placed son, Rattlesnake Bridge, is out of a mare by Cherokee Run, a son of the Blushing Groom horse, Runaway Groom (sire of Cherokee Run; grandsire of Kafwain and Yonaguska – himself broodmare sire of a Tapit stakes winner), and he also has graded stakes winner Honorable Dillon out of a mare by Blushing Groom son, Shy Tom; graded winner and grade one-placed Anchor Down out of a mare by Orientate (by Mt. Livermore, also sire of Housebuster and Peaks and Valleys); and graded winner Dreamologist out of a mare by Rahy.

Tapit has enjoyed remarkable success when his mates have featured the mare, Carols Christmas, in their pedigrees, this appearing in six of his stakes winners, including Champion Tapiture and grade one winner Tapizar. The most likely source is Olympio, broodmare sire of a trio of Tapit stakes winners, but Carols Christmas is also found in Wild Wonder, Early Flyer, Cuvee and Will He Shine.

Tapit’s Champion Untapable is out of a mare by Prized, and he has two stakes winners out of mares by that horse’s sire, Kris S (also sire of Arch, Rock Hard Ten and You and I). Kris S is by Roberto, also sire of Dynaformer, Red Ransom and Silver Hawk.

Tapit also has two stakes winners, one graded, out of mares by In Excess and another out of a mare Indian Charlie (broodmare sire of Race Day stakes winner Gee She Sparkles), as well as a stakes winner out of a mare by Cozzene, from another branch of Caro. He has classic winner Tonalist out of a mare by Pleasant Colony (sire of Pleasantly Perfect), and a grade one winner out of a mare by Concern, who is by Broad Brush, a horse who has done well under Tapit’s sire, Pulpit, and who is also sire of Include. Although it is not a strain that is often found, Tapit also has two stakes winners, including Champion Stardom Bound, out of mares by sons of Grey Dawn II. He also has classic winner Creator out of a mare by a son of Private Account, who is out of Champion Numbered Account, a sister to the dam of Woodman, the broodmare sire of Race Day’s own broodmare sire More Than Ready) and is available through Private Terms, Afternoon Deelites, Corporate Report, Personal Flag, Afternoon Deelites and Unaccounted For.
