Alan Porter’s 2020 Breeding Analysis for Wicked Strong

A grade one winner of almost $2,000,000 Wicked Strong is the highest earning horse at stud by Danzig’s record-breaking stallion son, Hard Spun, from an excellent Fred Hooper family. With 26 individual first crop winners, Wicked Strong, was a top five leading freshman sire in 2019.

Wicked Strong is out of a mare by a son of Summer Squall, and that would make him intriguing with mares descending from that horse’s three-quarters relative Storm Cat. We can note that Hard Spun has multiple grade one winner Hard Not to Like out of a mare by Tactical Cat (who is bred on a similar cross to the dam of Wicked Strong), two stakes winners out of mares by Storm Cat himself, and stakes winner out of mares by Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir and D’Wildcat), Stormy Atlantic and First Samurai (by Giant’s Causeway). There are numerous other sons of Storm Cat that could be tried here, including Giant’s Causeway, Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg and Henny Hughes; grandsire of Scat Daddy), Stormy Atlantic, Forestry, Stormin Fever, Bernstein, Harlan (sire of Harlan’s Holiday and Menifee), Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Heart), Pure Prize, Sir Cat and Bluegrass Cat (particularly interesting as he gives inbreeding to the dam of A.P. Indy). The successful cross of Danzig line stallions with Sadler’s Wells line mares, including a Hard Spun graded winner out of a mare by Galileo, is worth emulating here with mares by El Prado and his sons, Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller. Wicked Strong should also do well with Deputy Minister line mares, including through Dehere, Awesome Again (including via Ghostzapper and Toccet, who looks particularly interesting), Touch Gold, Silver Deputy, French Deputy (broodmare sire of a Hard Spun stakes winner), Salt Lake and Forest Camp.

Hard Spun has already established a very strong relationship with Mr. Prospector line mares. There are three stakes winners by Hard Spun out of mares by Mr. Prospector himself. Hard Spun’s Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Questing is out of a mare by Seeking the Gold (sire of Mutakddim, Petionville and Cape Town). From Gone West line mares, Hard Spun has sired English group winner Red Duke out of a mare by Gone West himself, grade one winner Spun to Run out of a Grand Slam mare and grade one winner Out For a Spin out of mare by Came Home. There are three Hard Spun stakes winners, two graded out of a mares by Mr. Greeley, and a stakes winner out of a mare by his son, El Corredor (also broodmare sire of a Wicked Strong stakes winner). There are also stakes winners by Hard Spun out of mares by Gone West line sires, Elusive Quality (sire of Quality Road) and Xaar (by Zafonic), which suggests crossing with daughters of Speightstown and Proud Citizen. From the Forty Niner branch comes graded scorer Island Town, out of a mare by Distorted Humor (who would be interesting here through Any Given Saturday, giving inbreeding to the dam of A.P. Indy) and stakes winners out of mares by Sunday Break and End Sweep (sire of Trippi), inviting daughters of, Tactical Advantage, Coronado’s Quest, Roar, Gold Fever, Gold Case, Luhuk and Twining.

The Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector, has been particularly good here, with grade one winner Hard Aces out of a mare by Quiet American, grade one winner Smooth Roller out of a mare by Unbridled, and stakes winners out of mares by Unbridled sons Empire Maker (sire of Pioneerof the Nile and Bodemeister) and Unbridled’s Song, inviting such as Broken Vow, Birdstone, Songandaprayer, Zensational, First Defence, Half Ours, Midshipman, Rockport Harbor and Old Fashioned. There are also Hard Spun stakes winners out of mares descending from Mr. Prospector through Carson City (from mares by Lord Carson and Five Star Day), with this strain available through City Zip, Good and Tough and Cuvee), Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair; grandsire of Formal Gold), Kingmambo (who would be interesting through Lemon Drop Kid), Smart Strike (sire of Curlin, Lookin At Lucky and English Channel), Fusaichi Pegasus and Allen’s Prospect. Mr. Prospector is a son of Raise a Native, and from another branch of that line Hard Spun has a stakes winner out of a mare by Alydar son, Strike the Gold.

Any mare carrying A.P. Indy will give a duplication of his dam, the exceptional broodmare, Weekend Surprise, and Hard Spun already has three stakes winners, one a group winner, out of mares by that sire. Among the numerous sources of A.P. Indy are Malibu Moon, Pulpit (sire of Tapit and Sky Mesa), Mineshaft, Congrats, Flatter, Majestic Warrior and Bernardini. Also from the Seattle Slew line, Hard Spun has graded stakes winner Big John B out of a mare by Doneraile Court, who would be especially interesting here.

From the Blushing Groom line Hard Spun has a grade one winner out of a mare by Housebuster, and a stakes winner out of a mare by his sire, Mt. Livermore (also sire of Orientate and Peaks and Valleys), and graded winner out of mare by Rahy. Hard Spun’s classic winner, Zo Impressive, is out of a mare by Cozzene (from the Caro line, which is also responsible for In Excess and Indian Charlie), and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Red Ransom (from the Roberto line).
