Somavia becomes first black type winner for Basin

September 28, 2025

Basin, the G1-winning juvenile son of Liam’s Map, sired his first black type winner from his debut crop of 2-year-olds, as his filly Somavia turned on the jets late to impressively win the $100,000 Iowa Sorority Stakes on Sept. 27 at Prairie Meadows.

The flashy chestnut filly proved to be superior in the field of nine, settling in striking range early in the six-furlong contest before imposing her will on her rivals late to draw away by three lengths on the wire.

Trained by Tristan Ashford, Somavia moved her earnings to $95,026 for owner Ron Stolich with her first career stakes victory. Earlier this summer, she broke her maiden at Prairie Meadows impressively by 3 1/2 lengths in a maiden special weight race. Somavia also becomes the latest black type winner to come from the esteemed breeding program of Allen Poindexter.

Basin, winner of the storied Hopeful Stakes (G1) and Saratoga’s top 2-year-old in 2019, is one of only 10 freshman sires with a black type winner to date in 2025, and he currently ranks just outside the top 10 by earnings in the 11 spot heading into October. His nine winners to date ranks him in the top six among his contemporaries.
