Shisospicy gives Mitole his first Eclipse Award winner
January 23, 2026
Mitole, who was the Champion Sprinter of 2019, is now a sire of a champion after Shisospicy was named the 2025 Champion Female Sprinter at the Eclipse Awards ceremony Jan. 22 in south Florida.
The now 4-year-old filly ascended to the top of her division with five wins in six starts in the U.S., culminating with a victory over males in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1). Prior to that, she set a track record in the Music City S. (G2) at Kentucky Downs and won the Mamzelle S. (G3) at Churchill Downs by 4 ¼-lengths.
Shisospicy also finished second in the voting for the 3-year-old Filly Eclipse.
After the Breeders’ Cup, Shisospicy sold for $5.2 million at the Fasig-Tipton November sale, when Morplay Racing bought out their partners Qatar Racing in the filly. Morplay announced that Shisospicy would return to trainer Jose D’Angelo’s barn for a 2026 campaign.
Shisospicy was bred by Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, who also campaigned Mitole.
“Corinne and I bought [Shisopsicy’s] mother [Mischief Galore] at OBS [Winter Mixed Sale],” recounted Bill. “She was an Into Mischief mare out of an Unbridled’s Song mother. That mare was liquid fast and there’s no question that the combination of Mitole and Into Mischief is where [Shisospicy] gets all that talent. She’s a result of Corinne and I’s breeding of extremely fast horses. I knew she had some talent when [Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds] sold her at OBS. It’s a classic example of breeding speed to speed which is what I do and in that situation, it really worked.”
Mitole, second on the 2025 Third-Crop Sire list, behind only Omaha Beach, is standing in 2026 for $10,000 S&N.
