Mia Mischief, who won the Eight Belles (G2) exactly one year ago, earned her first Grade 1 win with a 1 ¾-length victory over Marley’s Freedom in the $500,000 Humana Distaff on Derby Day at Churchill Downs.

The 4-year-old Into Mischief earned $303,800 and increased her earnings to $883,420 with a record of 14-6-6-0 for owners Heilighbrodt, Heider Family Stables and Madaket Stables.

Never more than a length from the outset of the seven-furlong affair, Mia Mischief took over the lead for good just outside the quarter pole and easily held off the runner-up to finish the distance in 1:21.78 for a lifetime-best Beyer Speed Figure of 99.

“I think the filly looks great right now,” said winning trainer Steve Asmussen. “She’s doing really well and this was our first major target of the year with her. And she came through. It means so much (getting a Grade I) with a filly who tries as hard as she does.”

Out of the Speightstown mare Greer Lynn, Mia Mischief was bred by Spendthrift Farm and sold to her owners for $300,000 at the Fasig-Tipton March Select Sale of 2-year-olds in Training.

Into Mischief already has seven stakes winners this year and 49 lifetime graded stakes winners. He currently ranks third on the 2019 General Sire List with over $5.4 million in progeny earnings.
