Bolt d’Oro colt wins debut in Churchill Downs maiden special weight

May 27, 2022

Leading First-Crop sire Bolt d’Oro got his third winner Friday at Churchill Downs when Owen’s Leap took his career debut by 1 ¾-lengths in a five-furlong maiden special weight contest for 2-year-olds.

The dark bay colt had a three-wide trip around the turn. He took command of the race outside the furlong marker and drew away late to stop the timer in :58.78 on a fast main track.

The winner is trained by Tom Amoss for Mike McLouglin, who purchased Owen’s Leap for $175,000 out of the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling sale. Thursday’s win was worth $69,460.

Owen’s Leap was bred by Clearsky Farms. Out of the stakes winner Defy Gravity, Owen’s Leap is a half-brother to stakes winner Green Destiny, while his dam is a half-sister to Las Virgenes S. (G1) winner Callback. This is also the family of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Super Saver.

Bolt d’Oro is the first freshman sire of 2022 to have three winners. His 2-year-old sales average of $260,778 is second only to Triple Crown winner Justify among freshman sires.
