‘Bolt’ strikes with popular debut maiden special weight winner at Monmouth

June 18, 2022

Bolt d’Oro became the first Freshman Sire to get five winners this year on Saturday when Major Dude turned in a very impressive performance in a five-furlong maiden special weight race at Monmouth Park.

The 2-year-old bay, owned by Spendthrift Farm, was bottled up behind and inside horses for the first three furlongs. When a narrow opening appeared at the top of the stretch, Major Dude shot through like a much more experienced horse and rolled home to win by 3 ¾-lengths in :59.60 on a fast main track.

The winner was bred by Clearsky Farms. Her third dam is the immortal Personal Ensign, making Major Dude a close relative to Grade 1 winners My Flag, Miner’s Mark and Traditionally.

Spendthrift purchased Major Dude for $550,000 out of the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling sale.

Among Bolt d’Oro’s five winners is the colt Pop d’Oro, who will be his sire’s first stakes starter in the $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Futurity Saturday at Santa Anita Park.
