Spendthrift Farm freshman sire Free Drop Billy, Union Rags’ only Grade 1-winning juvenile, sired his first winner from his second starter on June 27 when his 2-year-old colt Bourbon Therapy won a maiden special weight race at five furlongs on the Horseshoe Indianapolis turf.

Breaking from the middle of the nine-horse field, Bourbon Therapy assumed command in the first few strides and never was headed from that point, winning by nearly two lengths while stopping the clock in 58.04 seconds on the firm turf.

Owned by Hidden Creek Farm and John Ennis, the 2-year-old dark bay was bred in Kentucky by Scott Pierce.

Free Drop Billy has had some strong 2-year-old sales results this spring, topped by a $230,000 colt at the OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in Training and a $200,000 filly at the Texas April sale.

Campaigned by the Albaugh Family Stables LLC, Free Drop Billy burst on the scene in June of his 2-year-old season, winning his debut at Churchill Downs.  He would go on to finish second in both the Sanford S. (G3) and Hopeful S. (G1) at Saratoga, then scored his signature victory in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland.

Free Drop Billy is standing the 2022 breeding season at Spendthrift for a fee of $5,000 S&N and is participating in the farm’s Safe Bet Program for 2022.
