First-time starter Hurricane Debbie blew away her competition in the stretch to win a 4 ½-furlong maiden special weight Thursday at Keeneland by eight lengths.

The 2-year-old daughter of Brody’s Cause was in an early battle with Ski Slope before she took command for good in upper stretch. The chestnut juvenile found her best stride in the final furlong, pulling away with authority and winning as she pleased.

Hurricane Debbie is owned by Gabriel Duignan and Mrs. Charlie O’Connor and was bred in Kentucky by Springhouse Farm and Ben McElroy. She picked up $48,360 for the win.

Hurricane Debbie is the second foal out of Lucky’stormwarning and is a half-sister to the 3-year-old stakes-placed colt Lucci.

Brody’s Cause, who won both the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) and Blue Grass S. (G1) at Keeneland, has had three maiden winners in the past four days. His leading runner this year is the Grade 1 winner and Grade 2-placed filly Kalypso.
