Covfefe sets stakes record, earns 107 Beyer in Churchill’s Dogwood S.

September 21, 2019

Into Mischief’s Grade 1 filly Covfefe rolled to an eight-length victory in the $125,000 Dogwood S. Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs, setting a stakes record and setting the 3-year-old up for the Breeders’ Cup in early Nov. at Santa Anita Park.

Facing five overmatched rivals, Covfefe was content to track Take Charge Angel through a half-mile in :44.95. She moved up along side the pacesetter at the top of the stretch and took over without being asked. With an insurmountable lead, she was geared down late under Shaun Bridgmohan yet still managed to get the seven furlongs in a stakes-record 1:20.51, just missing the track record by :07 seconds and best the old Dogwood record by 2 ½-seconds.

“We all knew how talented she is but to just simply dominate the race as she did today was awesome,” said her trainer Brad Cox,. “She was going fast the entire way around there and just kept on going. She’s very special. On to the Breeders’ Cup.”

The $2 million Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) is on Nov. 2, and Covfefe figures to be one of the betting favorites in the 7-furlong event after recording her second 107 Beyer of 2019.

Covfefe is owned by LNJ Foxwoods. She has earned $560,025 and won five of seven starts, including the Test S. (G1) at Saratoga and Miss Preakness S. (G3) at Pimlico.

Covfefe is out of the Unbridled mare Antics and was bred in Kentucky by Alexander-Groves Thoroughbreds. She was purchased for $250,000 at Keeneland’s 2017 September Yearling Sale.
