Devil May Care adds G1 Coaching Club to resume

Devil May Care made it look easy with a four-length tally in the $250,000 Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), the first time in 94 runnings of the historic race that it was held at Saratoga.

The 3-year-old daughter of Spendthrift stallion Malibu Moon scored her second Grade 1 victory in a row, and third overall, in the 1 1/8-mile main track event. She won the Mother Goose on June 26 at Belmont Park, and the Frizette S., also at Belmont, last year.

Devil May Care went off the heavy 3-5 favorite in the Coaching Club, and she left little doubt as to who was the best in the race for sophomore fillies. Under a firm hold for the first six furlongs, the bay filly, ridden by John Velazquez, went to the lead on her own, clearing off by a length in mid-stretch, and was never threatened from that point.

Trainer Todd Pletcher knows he has one of the best fillies in the country. “The thing that I think gets lost in the shuffle a little bit is how much there is left in the tank,” said Pletcher. We tried to do the right thing after the (Kentucky) Derby and give her plenty of time to the Mother Goose and she rewarded us with a big effort and did the same today. I’ve felt all along that this filly is the best of her generation and if she continues to run like today, I think she’ll prove it.”

Devil May Care’s record now stands at 5-0-0 in eight starts. She has earned $699,000 for owner Glencrest Farm LLC, who purchased her at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale for $110,000.

Devil May Care is one of eight 2010 stakes winners by Malibu Moon. The 13-year-old stallion ranks fourth on the North America general sire list, and is among the top five in terms of winners and graded stakes winners.
