Champion sprinter Mitole got the yearling auction season off to a rousing start with a $250,000 filly topping the first-year stallion’s results during Tuesday’s Fasig-Tipton July sale.

Overall, Mitole’s average price was $108,400, more than seven times his stud fee.

Mitole’s top two lots on the day came very early in the sale, with hip No. 12 his personal topper, and hip No. 2 bringing $140,000.

Hip 12 was consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent, who purchased the filly for $130,000 at the January OBS Winter sale. Chenoweth Run Stables was the winning bidder for the filly out of the stakes winner Lunarlady, who has produced three winners and is a sister to graded winners Lunarpal and Astrology.

“Mitole’s gotten off to a great start, he had a $250,000 filly and we also sold a $140,000 filly, hip 2,” said Spendthrift’s Ned Toffey. “You always worry about being that early in the sale, but that was a fair price for her, we thought.”

Hip 2, which Toffey referenced, was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency for Spendthrift. Pura Vida 2022 was the winning bidder for the Kentucky-bred bay filly. This is a very strong female family that includes the likes of Donn H. (G1) winner Albertus Maximus, Champagne S. (G1) winner Daredevil, and Santa Maria H. (G1) winner Race the Wild Wind.
