Goldencents’ 2yo colt Newstome rallies for second stakes win

November 16, 2019

Newstome’s gallant victory in the $100,000 James F. Lewis III S. at Laurel Park gave the 2-year-old Goldencents colt his second stakes win and third victory in four lifetime starts.

Newstome me also owns a win in the Mark McDermott S. and has earned $165,000 for owner Marie Trombetta.

Goldencents, last year’s leading First-Crop sire by winners, leads the 2019 Second-Crop sire list with over $5 million in progeny earnings. Among his 75 winners are multiple graded winners Mr. Money and Always Hope, as well as Louisiana Derby (G2) winner By My Standards.

Newstome used all of the long Laurel stretch to win the six-furlong James Lewis in a three-way photo. He stalked the leaders through the first half-mile, then slowly cut into the margin in the stretch, ultimately surging past Reform School in the final sixteenth and holding off Informative by a nose.

The winner was bred by Equivine Farm. His third dam was 3-year-old champion filly Hollywood Wildcat and the dam of Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner War Chant.
