Gormley’s final offering through the ring Wednesday at OBS would prove to the highest price paid for a colt by a freshman sire when the hammer fell at $550,000 for hip No. 531.

The colt proved to be the topper of a terrific kick-off of the 2-year-old auction season for the Spendthrift stallion, helping boost his average price to a superlative $153,857 from seven lots sold.

Wednesday’s star, consigned by Eddie Woods, agent, went to Mike Hall and Sam Ross’s Breeze Easy LLC. The bay colt was a $160,000 buy at last year’s Fasig-Tipton September Showcase.

“He had a fabulous breeze,” Woods said of the colt’s bullet :09 4/5-seconds move at the Under Tack Show. “He’s a magnificent-looking horse. It’s good money for a first-season stallion. He did everything right and was real easy on the eyes, hence everyone liked him.”

Bred by Ledgelands & Andrew C. Ritter in Kentucky, the colt is out of Green Eyed Cat and is a half-brother to stakes winner Little Kansas. His second dam is millionaire and two-time Grade 1 winner Critical Eye.
