Extra Anejo cruised to a 9 ½-length debut win in a $100,000 maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds Thursday at Keeneland.

The Into Mischief colt was named a “TDN Rising Star” following the dazzling display. The bay colt is the 35th to earn the designation for his sire, joining a list that began with future dual Breeders’ Cup winner Goldencents and includes the likes of Instagrand, Gamine, Mandaloun, Life Is Good and many more.

Extra Anejo, ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, broke fast and was head to head for the lead in the first furlong. He made the lead in the after a quarter-mile, when he was up by a length. From there, he widened his margin without any urging whatsoever. Gaffalione eased up when the win was assured, cantering under the wire in 1:27.17 for the “about 7 furlongs” on a fast track.

Owner Winchell Thoroughbreds went to $1.35 million at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling sale to purchase the colt from his breeder’s Mt. Brilliant Farm consignment.  Extra Anejo is the first foal out of Superiority Complex (IRE), whose dam Justlookdontouch (IRE) is a half to Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) champ Islington (IRE).
