Into Mischief’s Fulsome gets first black type in $300,000 Oaklawn S.

May 2, 2021

Fulsome got his first stakes win and also earned an automatic berth in the May 15 Preakness S. (G1) with his come-from-behind victory in Saturday’s $300,000 Oaklawn S. on closing day at the Hot Springs track.

Fulsome, who like Kentucky Derby(G1) runner-up is a Juddmonte Farms homebred son of Into Mischief, was making his dirt stakes debut in Saturday’s 1 1/8-mile contest for 3-year-olds.

Ridden with patience through the early stages by Martin Garcia, Fulsome didn’t make his move for the lead until midway on the far turn. Garcia went four-wide around traffic at the top of the stretch to swoop to the lead, then outran stablemate Warrant to win by 1 ¼-lengths in 1:50.01.

“That was huge. Nice horse,” said trainer Brad Cox via phone from Churchill Downs. “Obviously, he’s been able to transfer his form over to the dirt. He’s been on the turf, but, hey, he’s an Into Mischief. He looked like he’s dual surface. Very proud of him. We’re happy for Juddmonte. Running back on short rest, had to ship him and everything, but he showed up and ran huge. We’ll regroup and talk to Juddmonte, (USA General Manager) Garrett O’Rourke, about possibly running (in the Preakness) and also Mandaloun could be a question mark as well.”

Fulsome’s dam Flourish is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winners Sightseek and Tate’s Creek. Fulsome is now 3-1-0 in six starts and has banked $282,714.

Into Mischief had a remarkable Saturday, with Gamine becoming racing’s newest millionaire in the Derby City Distaff (G1), Dayoutoftheoffice second in the Eight Belles S. (G2), Sombeyay second in the Twin Spires Turf Sprint (G2), and Missy P. second in the Angels Flight S. at Santa Anita. His progeny have won or placed in 37 stakes this year, 15 more than any other stallion in North America.
