General Jim prevailed by a neck over Fort Bragg after a protracted stretch duel to win the $500,000 Pat Day Mile (G2) Saturday, Derby Day at Churchill Downs.

The 3-year-old Into Mischief colt took the Swale S. (G3) in his previous outing and is now 4-0-2 in seven starts and has earned $519,833.

General Jim, breaking from post 8 in the field of 13, settled between horses in mid-pack as Damon’s Mound rolled through fractions of :22.41 and :45.00. That pace began to take its toll and General Jim closed in on the leaders around the turn.

Coming into the stretch, he was within a length of new leader Fort Bragg. Those two would battle side-by-side all the way to the wire, with General Jim getting the better of his foe by a neck.

The final time of 1:34.43 was good for a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 100.

“It was a magnificent win,” owner Don Adams said. “To win on day like today is truly special. He’s become a nice horse, very special. He’s won two in a row now and hopefully we’ll see good things down the road. We’ll let Shug (McGaughey) decide what’s next for him.”

General Jim was bred in Kentucky by Fifth Avenue Bloodstock and Centerline Breeding. He sold to Adams’ Courtlandt Farm for $850,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling sale.

General Jim capped off an incredible Derby weekend at Churchill Downs that included Pretty Mischievous winning the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and Played Hard taking the La Troienne S. (G1).
