Johannasan first winner for Can the Man

June 15, 2018

Spendthrift Farm’s multiple stakes winner Can the Man was represented by his first winner on June 14 when Johannasan scored an impressive four-length maiden special weight victory at Prairie Meadows.

Racing for his breeder Iron Oaks Farm, the chestnut juvenile led nearly every step of the way in the five-furlong contest for 2-year-olds. Maintaining a narrow advantage through the first three furlongs, he quickly opened up a big lead in mid-stretch, and was geared down late to stop the timer in :58.64 on a fast main track.

Kentucky-bred Johannasan is the first foal out of Lutethetill, a daughter of Midnight Lute and a half-sister to Conveyance, winner of the Southwest S. (G3) and San Rafael S. (G3), as well as the stakes winner Yukon Bull.

Can the Man is a son of Spendthrift’s top-class stallion Into Mischief. Trained by Bob Baffert, Can the Man was a debut winner at two, then went on to be beaten only a length in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) in just his second lifetime start. He took the $100,000 Speakeasy S. that October, then in his first start at three, won the Affirmed S. (G3).

Can the Man’s dam Smolensk is half-sister to Demoiselle S. (G2) winner Better Than Honour, who is the dam of Belmont S. (G1) winners Rags to Riches and Jazil. Can the Man entered stud at Spendthrift in 2015 and now stands for $3,500 live foal.
