Malibu Moon distaffers 1-3 in G1 Ogden Phipps

June 13, 2010

Malibu Moon put his stamp on the 42nd running of the $250,000 Ogden Phipps H. when a pair of fillies by the Spendthrift stallion finished first and third in the 1 1/16-mile main track race for older fillies and mares.

Life At Ten, who is undefeated in her last five starts, won the Phipps by 2 3/4-lengths, while Funny Moon checked in a good third, just a head out of the runner-up spot.

Life At Ten stumbled at the start of the Phipps, but quickly went to the front. She set some blistering fractions of :45.55 for the half mile and 1:08.40 for the six furlongs. Despite the pace, she actually pulled away from the field in the stretch, with Unrivaled Belle, the filly who had beaten Rachel Alexandra in her previous start, in second, just a head in front of Funny Moon. The final time was 1:40.72. The clocking earned Life At Ten a career-tying best Beyer Speed Figure of 101.

The winning streak for Life At Ten, a five-year-old mare, dates back to last Nov. 9. Most recently, she won the $200,000 Sixty Sails (G3) at Hawthorne Racecourse on Apr. 17. Prior to the Sixty Sails, Life At Ten had won three in a row at Aqueduct, including a pair of listed stakes in the Rare Treat and Snit S. She is trained by Todd Pletcher.

Bred by Nickleback Farm in Kentucky, Life At Ten is out of the winning Rahy mare Rahrahsixboombah. She is now 6-5-1 in 13 career starts, with earnings of $459,267 for owner Cynthia DeBartolo.

Malibu Moon had a huge day on June 12; in addition to Life At Ten and Funny Moon, his son Baltimore Bob won the Da Hoss S. at Colonial Downs.

Malibu Moon’s success in 2010 has put him high on the North American general sire list in several categories: third in graded stakes winners; third in overall winners; fifth in earnings; and seventh in stakes winners.
